Tribute to a visionary educationist

The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) observed the second death anniversary of IoBM’s Late Founder President, Shahjehan Syed Karim, at the auditorium on Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Glowing tributes were paid to acknowledge the Late Founder President’s vision and dedication to promote education in Pakistan and to celebrate his life.

Present on this occasion were IoBM’s Mr. Talib S. Karim, President; Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director, Administration, Admission and Finance; Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Rector; Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani, Senior Advisor to President, Dean, CBM, and HoD Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) and Graduate Studies (OGS); Dr. Shahida Wizarat, Dean College of Economics and Social Development (CESD); Dr. Seema Ansari, Associate Dean, College of Engineering and Sciences (CES) and Dr. Tariq Rahim Soomro, Dean College of Computer Science and Information Systems (CCSIS). This event was well-attended by Deans, HoDs, faculty management, students and staff. Invited to speak at this occasion were Mr. Bashir Janmohammad, Chancellor IoBM and Chairman Westbury Group of Companies; Professor Dr. Arshad Syed Karim, Director QEC and Faculty Development, Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET); Mr. Jawaid Anwar, Chancellor, SSUET and Ms. Misbah Iqbal, Assistant Professor, Accounting and Finance and Coordinator, BS-Social Entrepreneurship and Social Leadership, IoBM. While Nabhan S. Karim, Assistant Manager, Media Studies, IoBM and the grandchild of Late Shahjehan S. Karim was the master of ceremonies, Hafiz Humayun Baig recited the verses from the Holy Quran and offered fateha.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Talib S. Karim said it was a challenge for him to step into the shoes of the Late Founder President. He said that the Late Founder President provided the best education to his children and by establishing IoBM he provided the best education to the students of Pakistan. He said that the Late Founder President’s ethical values earned him success in life and the Late President always showed concern for the education and career choices of his own children and grandchildren. Mr. Talib Karim advised to always display honesty and integrity in our lives which were the key character traits the Late Founder President persistently followed. Ms. Sabina Mohsin shared with the audience the creation of the “Shahjehan Syed Karim Goth”, located 25 kilometers from Mithi. She said that Shama Masjid will be constructed in this village whose foundations were laid this year on Ramazan 27. Mr. Mohsin Furqan said that the village will comprise 25 houses and will accommodate 250 people. Each house will have a covered room, a veranda, a grocery shop and a handicraft shop. This project is a “Qarz-e-Hasana” as the villagers will pay back a certain amount from their income so they do not consider it as a charity. According to Mr. Furqan, the villagers will build their own homes for which they will earn a salary and will also learn the skill of building homes. This village is expected to be completed by May 2020.

While speaking at the occasion, Mr. Bashir Janmohammad said that the exponential contributions of IoBM’s Late Founder President in education as a civil servant will be remembered forever. He said that Late Shahjehan S. Karim always valued the fruits of education. He said that IoBM’s humble origins from a three-room set-up to eventually turning into a state-of-the-art campus within a few years is a proof of the Late Founder President’s commitment for the cause he followed meticulously after his retirement. Dr. Arshad S. Karim said that the Late Founder President saw much economic decline in Sindh while serving as the Chief Secretary of the province. This motivated him to promote education for he believed that education will help people overcome their economic dilemmas. According to Dr. Karim, the Late Founder President was born with a natural charisma which helped him in achieving life and career excellence. Dr. Karim said that the Late Founder President’s focus was on educational, social and family values. Dr. Karim further added that IoBM is not just a legacy of Late Shahjehan S. Karim but it is his garden from where alumni blossom, gain knowledge and recieve the acumen to serve in Pakistan and abroad.

Mr. Jawaid Anwar said that IoBM is the Late Founder President’s bequest. He was pleased to see that Mr. Talib Karim and Ms. Sabina Mohsin along with their team are moving forward with the same vision which the Late Founder President pursued to establish IoBM. He further said that we are indebted to give back to the society in any form and that the Late Founder President’s debt has been paid through his struggles to build IoBM as a recognized name in higher education. Ms. Misbah Iqbal, an IoBM alumnus and now a faculty at the Institute with nearly 23 years of association with IoBM said that the Late Founder President always envisioned unity and harmony in the Sindh province and viewed that educating the people of Sindh will help them overcome their social and economic challenges. Ms. Iqbal said that the Late Founder President always cherished the creation of Pakistan and worked for its better future as he once said that, “given all my abilities, had it been not for Pakistan I would have not excelled in life.”
