Engaging the 21st Century Learner
Living up to its tradition of offering high-quality professional development opportunity for teachers, educators, and academicians, the Society of Pakistan English Language Teachers (SPELT) scheduled its 34th International Conference at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) on November 3 – 4, 2018 with the futuristic theme of “Engaging the 21st Century Learner.”
Dr. Tina Sharpe, a faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney delivered the Keynote address on “Scaffolding Teachers’ Professional Learning to Support Students’ Understanding.” National and International speakers invited were Dr. Judy Sharkey, University of New Hampshire, Dr. Ron Thomson, Brock University, Canada , Ms. Beth Trudell and Ms. Raihana Sultana from BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Dr. Habibullah Pathan, English Language Development Centre (MUET) Jamshoro. Other eminent speakers from the field of education and English Language Teaching invited were Dr. Carolyn Layzer, Ms. Motikala, Ms. Subba Dewan, Dr.Tazanfal Tehseem, Dr. Madhu Sharma, Dr. Abbas Hussain, Dr Iqbal Afridi, Ms. Imrana Maqsood, Ms. Amra Alam, Ms. Saima Haq, Dr. Salma Khalil, Ms. Rukhsana Shah and Ms. Mehar Cawasji. Present on the opening of this occasion were faculty of Department of Communication and Languages, IoBM including Dr. Mehvish Saleem, HoD, Dr. Fauzia Shamim, Senior Fellow, Ms. Shumaila Omar, Assistant Professor, Dr. Aliya Sikandar, Assistant Professor and Dr. Samra Javed, Manager EMEC.
The 34th SPELT International Conference’s four plenary sessions include “Intercultural Citizenship; Fostering Civic Engagement through Language Education”, “A Shifting Role of Motivation for Learning English in Pakistan”, “Teacher Cognition and English Pronunciation Instruction” and “Making Waves: Radio Waves That Is”. Also included in this conference were workshops and talks by Paramount Books Pvt. Ltd and Oxford University Press, presentations by Research Special Interest Groups along with webinars, poster presentations, teaching tips, colloquiums and panel discussions.
