ORIC-IoBM and PITAC Workshop at EMEC
Mr. Talib Karim, President Institute of Business Management (IoBM) emphasized that entrepreneurship is the key word at IoBM and that the Institute is gradually focusing on vocational training. He said that while the availability of funds is the biggest limitation for entrepreneurs, IoBM is pursuing to build its incubation centre where it will first facilitate its own students in setting up their businesses. He said that this country and its economy need more of job creators and not job seekers. He further said that as an educational institute IoBM will impart upon students the required skills along with incubating ideas of future entrepreneurs.
Mr. Talib Karim, was addressing Workshop on “Project Management for Entrepreneurship: Techniques and Sources” organized by the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) in collaboration with Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Centre (PITAC), Ministry of Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan, on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Entrepreneurship and Management Excellence Center (EMEC), IoBM. Invited as guests from the PITAC were Engr. Muhammad Irfan Zaheer, Director General and Mr. Muhammad Irfan Jarar, Director. Resource persons invited were Dr. Saba Fazal Firdousi, Economic Advisor, PITAC and Dr. Hassnain Javed, Advisor, PITAC.
Earlier Prof. Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani, Advisor to President and HoD, Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) and Office of Graduate Studies (OGS), IoBM welcomed the distinguished guests from the Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Centre and said that entrepreneurship was the planning and designing of new businesses and that true entrepreneurship comes with innovation. It also reduces the burden from the state. He said that the state’s role is regulation along with policy making, facilitating and foreign policy and that it must govern the industrial process while the entrepreneurs and industrialists must provide the main fuel of production to the state in the form of human resource, material resource and financial resource.
Amid personal and professional inspiration from IoBM’s Mr. Talib Karim, President and managerial model set by IoBM’s Ms. Sabina Mohsin, Executive Director, this Workshop was planned and organized with supervision of Prof. Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani, and assistance from ORIC-IoBM’s Mr. Muhammad Tariq, Manager, Research Operation and Development and Ms. Farah Habib, Research Coordinator. Present during this workshop were key office bearers of the Ministry of Industry and Production, PITAC and IoBM’s faculty and management. The scope of this Workshop included: The entrepreneurial mindset, the different paths for applied entrepreneur, core concepts and framework and idea generation, fundraising and laying the groundwork.
During her presentation, Dr. Saba Fazal Firdousi highlighted the project management models, shared case studies from Pakistan’s corporate market, disused characteristics of an entrepreneur, how to capture opportunities and address challenges, how to create financial feasibility and ways to calculate the net present value, payback period and internal rate of return analysis for effective financial management of one’s business. During his address, Dr. Hassnain Javed stressed upon building a long-term relationship with the academia of Pakistan especially with that of the IoBM in facilitating PITAC’s mission of creating entrepreneurs. Mr. Talib Karim assured to support PITAC but also asked PITAC to focus on IoBM’s strong areas such as bookkeeping, accountant, software development, research, data collection and presentation. He asked Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani to represent IoBM during PITAC’s upcoming “Applied Entrepreneurship: Think and Grow International Conference 2019” on March 1-2, 2019 in Lahore. During a question raised by a faculty, Mr. Abdul Qadir Molvi, regarding the review and critical analysis phase of this project management workshop, to which Dr. Hassnain Javed replied that this will be taken up in the days to come.
Resource person Dr. Saba Fazal Firdousi has a PhD (Economic System Analysis and Management) from Jiangsu University, China, and DPhil (Industrial Economics) from Oxford University, United Kingdom. She is currently serving as an Economic Advisor in PITAC, Ministry of Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan and as a Research and Teaching Fellow at the School of Economics and Finance in Jiangsu University, China. Preciously she has served in the Centre of Excellence, CPEC, under Ministry of Planning Development and Reforms. She is also a Certified Master Trainer and has authored various books.
Resource person Dr. Hassnain Javed has completed his PhD (Small and Medium Enterprises and Innovation) from Jiangsu University, China and is currently serving as Advisor in PITAC, Ministry of Industries and Production, Government of Pakistan and as Adjunct Faculty at Foreign Policy Analysis Overseas Education College, Jiangsu University, China. He has previously served in Centre of Excellence, CPEC under Ministry of Planning Development and Reforms. He is also a Certified Master Trainer.
