Policy-makers explore prospects for Halal Meat Export

The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) in collaboration with Halal Awareness and Research Council (HARC) and IoBM’s Supply Chain Department and Entrepreneurship Department organized an industry, academia and policy-makers’ round table conference on “Halal Meat Export: Prospects, Challenges and Effective Policy Measures” on Saturday, May 04, 2019 at the Entrepreneurship and Management Excellence Center (EMEC), IoBM. While the Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. Amanat Ali Jalbani, Dean IoBM, the Keynote Address was given by Mr. Afaq Shamsi, Vice President, Halal Awareness and Research Council (HARC). Mr. Talib Karim, President IoBM, distributed souvenirs among the guests and participants of this conference. Dr. Syed Irfan Hyder, Rector IoBM, was also present on this occasion.

Participants from Pakistani meat industry, halal certification bodies, and academia were invited to present their recommendations in the presence of top policy-makers from government departments. Moderators of this event were IoBM’s Mr. Moin Ali Khan, HoD, Supply Chain and Logistics Department and Mr. Rehan Muzamil Butt, Senior Lecturer, Entrepreneurship Department. 

Invited to this conference were Dr. Liaqat Ali Shah, Head, Policy Division, Trade and Industrial Cooperation, Centre of Excellence for China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CoE-CPEC), Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE);  Dr. Fahd Amjad, Head of Policy Division, Regional Connectivity under CPEC (BS-20), (CoE-CPEC), Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform: Mr. Ahasn Abbas, Senior Research Fellow, (CoE-CPEC); Ms. Shaista Mumtaz, Research Assistant, Trade and Industry Cooperation, (CoE-CPEC) and Dr. Johar Ali, Member, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC).

Such topics were covered as Policy Initiative/Regulatory Framework to Boost Pakistan’s Halal Meat Export by Dr. Johar Ali, Member, PARC; Standards and Certifications of Halal Meat Exports by Dr. Muhammad Illyas, Director, Ministry of Food and Security and Dr. Majid, Animal Quarantine Department; Role of Cold Supply Chain and Requirements of Meat Industry by Mr. Syed Samad (PTN) and Dr. Fahd Amjad, Policy Head, CoE-CPEC; Issues in Animal Health, Nutrition and Barriers in Breeding Farms and Feeds: Current Status and Future Strategies by Dr. Nauman, Expert Livestock; Prospects and Challenges to Meat Exports by Dr. Khurram Rafiq, Head of Operations, Fauji Meat Limited; Compliance Issues in Meat Processing by Mr. Bilal Tata, Tata Foods and Demand of Chinese Halal Meat Importers by Mr. Amin Nathani, Pak-China Chamber of Commerce. The concluding remarks and policy suggestions were presented by Dr. Liaquat Ali Shah, Policy Head, Trade and Industry, CoE-CPEC while the Vote of Thanks was presented by Dr. Fahd Amjad, Dr. Ahsan Abbas, Senior Research Fellow, CoE and Mr. Afaq Shamsi (Vice President, Halal Awareness and Research Council).
